Vaineeka Vidwan Award
This award was instituted in 2015 in memory
and honour of Padma Bhushan Principal
K. S. Narayanaswamy, the former Principal
of our Sangeetha Vidyalaya, on the occasion
of his centenary celebrations. The award
is conferred each year on a musician with
acknowledged contribution in the playing of
the divine instrument ‘Veena’ in which Principal
Narayanaswamy was most proficient. The
award carries a cash prize of Rs. 1,00,000/-, a tall
bronze lamp and a shawl. The awards function
is followed by a Veena concert by the awardee.
Principal K. S. Narayanaswamy was a
Vaineeka Vidwan of exceptional merit. He was
the Principal of our Sangeetha Vidyalaya for 15
long years. The Vidyalaya rose to great heights
under his stewardship. During his tenure at
the Sabha, Carnatic music in the city glowed
with rare brilliance. He set high standards in
teaching. He retired from the Sabha on 1.7.1986.
Glowing tributes were paid to him at a function
arranged in his honour on 15th June
1986. On 7th July 1986, he gave a
lecture demonstration on Veena
for the benefit of students before
signing off from Bombay. This year the award was
conferred on Smt. Rukmini
Gopalakrishnan from Chennai on
25.09.2022.
