Sabh With A Difference
Sri. Shanmukhananda Fine Arts &
Sangeetha Sabha has redefined
culture to encompass the whole
gamut of public good. Singularly
this is the only institution which
combines the best of Indian culture,
art and tradition with community
healthcare. Over the years it has
espoused several causes. It has
also given a new interpretation
to its relations with its members.
The conventional milestones in
one’s life which traditionally are
celebrated as a family affair have
graduated to an institutional
activity bringing abundance of joy
not just to the member concerned
but to the entire family of members
of the Sabha
The Spirit of Mumbai Award
At the sound of Gunfire, the first
reaction is to save yourselves. A few
Mumbaikars thought otherwise.
Mumbai’s tryst with terror between
November 26 and 29, 2008 left a
deep wound and impressionable
scar on the psyche of the city. The
city rose again like a phoenix and
continues to be vibrant as before.
There were several extraordinary
“ordinary” people who did not
succumb to fear. Most of them
showed tremendous courage in the
face of most trying circumstances and demonstrated courage, care
and concern for others shown in
the gloom that enveloped the city.
It is this human spirit that emerged
so strongly out of every adversity
that the city faced. On 6th December
2008, within a week, of the terror
attack, the Sabha organised THE
SPIRIT OF MUMBAI AWARDS. It
honoured 20 Mumbaikars for their
undying spirit that brought awe
and admiration for their brave acts.

of Maharashtra presided over the

Spirit of Mumbai
Awards on
Saturday, 6th August 2005
On the fateful day of 26th July
2005, it rained 956.1 mm at
Santacruz and just 74.2 mm at
Colaba. 853 notified dead and
about 1000 crores loss to property
shook the conscience of the
city. The city that never sleeps
was plunged into darkness in its
suburbs for 3 days. Helpless cattle
which died were dumped by the
way side creating a fertile field of
epidemics. Essential supplies were
halted. Waist high water marooned
the city. Patients suffered in the
hospitals. The city’s political system
demised for the time being but its
people rose in unison to save the
people in distress. It witnessed
heroism on a scale never seen
before. Shri. John D’Souza whom
the locals called “Kaliba” saved
more than 20 children near St.
Anthony’s Girls School in Chembur
but he did not survive to tell the
tale. The indomitable courage
of Parthasarathy family of Kalina
humbled the city.

Continuing with the practice
of celebrating the centenary of
members away from their homes
into the institution, the 10th
February 2014 function marked
a high point in the history of the
Sabha like the one witnessed
on 9th August 2009. Shri. G. V.

of his separation from the Sabha
made no difference when it
came to celebrating this rarest
of rare event. These events were
acclaimed as very unique to any
institution.
